XTRADECALS’ PHANTOM collection, intended for Airfix’s newly tooled 1/72 FG.1 and soon-to-be-released FGR.2 (but equally usable on Fujimi’s kits), draws to an initial close with three sets of airframe stencils.
Modellers with experience of its Hawk markings will recognise the format, which splits the airframes by their colour schemes. Thus, there are separate sheets for RN machines (X72287), camouflaged RAF aircraft (X72288) and finally, low-vis grey Phantoms (X72289). Each contains sufficient stencils for a single model, including fuselage, intake and wing walkway lines, with placards and warning triangles for the underwing pylons. All three supply numerals to allow any RAF/RN machine to be portrayed, while the RN and grey Phantom sets also offer extra roundels.
The marking guides are in the form of four-view diagrams, but arguably these are a weak point, due to the small size of the numbers (approximately 4pt text), and the underside view, which is printed on an A5 sheet (the others are on A4) and is difficult to read without a visual aid. But at £7.99 each, these are great value, either for replacing lost/damaged decals or for refurbishing old models. For more on these and other Xtradecal products, visit: www.hannants.co.uk
